MEKHTAAL has the particularity to be a complete outcross to the Sadlers’ Wells, Danehill, Linamix and Kendor lines. Sadler’s Wells has of course been a proven cross with MEKHTAAL’s sire Sea The Stars, yet other stallions from the direct Northern Dancer line have proved their value: Storm Cat as well as the stallions hailing from Nijinsky and Nureyev have all produced Group winners by Sea The Stars. The Nijinsky line has also been particularly fruitful with MEKHTAAL’s damsire Silver Hawk.
MEKHTAAL’s sire Sea The Stars, who has registered an additional five Group winners this year, has had tremendous success with mares hailing from the Phalaris line, represented in 80% of the maternal lines (first three generations) of his Group winners. The Nasrullah line in particular appears in 7 of his 9 Group 1 winners, mostly through Shirley Heights, Bold Ruler, Highest Honor, Blushing Groom and Mill Reef.
MEKHTAAL’s damsire Silver Hawk also has 8 of his 10 Group 1 winners represented with the line of Phalaris in the first three generations of their maternal pedigrees, mainly via Native Dancer’s blood.
Outcross matings that would be appealing are with the German lines of Konigsstuhl or Surumu, who are the damsires of five of Sea The Stars’ Group winners. Another tempting outcross would be with mares from the Sharpen Up or from the Hail To Reason lines, who have each produced four Group winners by mating to Sea The Stars.
